I thought that this was wayyyyy too funny.
And because the poll is down, let's discuss. Who think this is disgusting? I do, although, I'll be living in Chicago come a month and a half and might take advantage of this ... but it's still disgusting!
Problem for McD's is that customers are probably going to want technical support on why their wifi isnt' working while they're chowing on their big mac.
So yeah, who has a laptop? who loves their laptop? Who has wi-fi? who loves their wi-fi? Who loves mcdonalds? who is obesce? post! now!
spork.

wow, long time since I last commented.
Anyways... I think this is a joke. I can't see the people who go to McDonalds spenging 30 minutes to an hour online in the store. Most people go there to get their food and leave, or get their food and talk to their friends. I understood Cyber Cafes. People who go to those places often go alone and like to do homework while they sip on their Caramel Machiatto.
Secondly, can you imagine the amount of food that would be getting into the mouse, keyboard and other openings in the computer. The damage by people who think its funny to destroy other people's things. The little kids who would love nothing better than to shove frys and sauce into/onto any exposed part of that computer.
This may work in upscale business districts or upscale shopping locations. I do not, however, see this working in my McDonalds on Third St. where the common hairstyle includes either hair-rollers or a mullett.
::a bit of a rant on the side::
As for the obescity issue... I'm sorry, if you're obesce, it is your own fault. No one is wanting to take responsibility for their own actions anymore. People are suing fast food for them being fat. STOP GOING THERE TO EAT!!! People suing tobacco for their cancer. Tobacco says that smoking kills, they admit and warn people. So now, if people smoke, its their fault. I could go on, but I wont. I just wish people would take responsibility for their own actions. It's too easy to sue someone for the most insignificant things, and WIN!!!
well, the skinny computer nerd stereotype will change when this goes mainstream...
and bigg dawg, i doubt anyone who goes to the third street mcdonald's even knows what wifi is. it's freakin' third street. i don't even think they know what a big mac is.
as for the actual issue at hand, i think it's ridiculous. ever since i read this, though, everytime i pass a mcdonald's i start thinking of a faster wireless connection, and that really frightens me. the power of corporate america is immense.
I wish I fit the skinny computer nerd stereotype .... wait, no I don't ... I wish I fit the skinny and didn't fit the computer nerd ... ehehe
no, mcdonald's might wifi the 3rd street one because that's the double decker, right? if mcd's ever did wifi louisville, I'd think they'd hit that because so many office workers probably go there for lunch ... the mcd's they would never wifi is the one on say, 15th and broadway, near where I work ... because there aren't any office buildings out there OTHER THAN b-f where I work.
And by the way ... can I please tangent here for a second to take a moment to proclaim the following: the McGriddle is the single greatest breakfast sandwhich I have ever had in my entire life. no really. Well, wait. the sausage egg and cheese McGriddle ... sorry for confusion. I mean, what an INGENIOUS concept, pancakes as bread. quite literally, soooo good. anyone else know what I'm talking about? ok, enough
so yeah, I went running today for the first time in 2 weeks, that was good ... a lot better than sitting on my wifi laptop in my room ... or mcdonald's ;)
cyber cafe's are cool, but what we really need are those coffee, weed, payote, mushroom cafe's that Amsterdam has ... yeah. I'd never do any of that shit ... but I'd be fucking high as hell on caffeine! ehehe.
alright, random ... the whole thing ... I actually just before this sentence got up for half hour came back and realize I never submitted, read what I wrote ... and realized the seriousness of my insanity ...
sp.
mcdonald's is just hurting. my dad's restaurant used to subscribe to restaurant business, and everything you read about mcdonald's is negative .. bad taste reviews, no increased business, restaurant closings, etc. so they're trying REALLY hard to do anything. i think i passed the most gorgeous mcdonald's in san francisco, which might also be one of mcdonald's new attempts to become a sit-down restaurant .. the word "mcdonald's" was in white shiny cursive, it was big and white and nice looking ..
then i passed a lot of billboards in california mentioning the wi-fi restaurants coming soon, so even if its ridiculous, its not a joke. i just think it's sad, because after you read fast food nation, you realise what a bad rep mcdonald's is always going to have ..
and yet i always stop by and get their fries. AUGH.
anyway, i am thinking about asking in and out burger to expand east towards us. has anyone ever eaten there? ITS DELICIOUS, so delicious i even bought a t-shirt. and you dont see me sportin a mcdonald's shirt. ^_^
It's true, McDonald's is hurting. Of course, the only reason I know this is because Marc told me ... but they are. As far as fancy white McDonald's with cool lettering, I seem to remember seeing these every now and then in really big cities, like I think Chicago has one. I think it just means it's a major location, but I could be wrong. I might just be thinking of something else, like the Rock'n'Roll McDonald's. Now those were good times.
Now when you saw signs for wifi restaurants, do you mean just McD's? Either way, I never thought the article was a joke. I knew they were serious. But you're right, it is a ridiculous idea. I think that it can only work in the right type of spot, and McD's is not one. Starbucks, for instance, could benefit immensly from something like that. I'd use Starbucks' wifi if they had it. A lot of people go there to study, read, etc. If not wifi they should at least get a few RJ45 CAT5 jacks in the vault on hurstborne ... that'd be badass enough.
I am a sucker for McDonald's and fast food too, but I think it'll be a while before in and out comes here. They're only west coast, right? At least, that's the only place I've seen them. But mmm mmm yes, they are good. Them and Carl Jr. Two great burger joints.
OK, work time.
krops.
not that surprising, i've been in a mcdonald's in london that had a little internet cafe deal. in fact, we went in there just to use the internet.
and oh my goodness, in and out burger. wow. yum. and whataburger. and jack in the box. geez, we are severely lacking on this side of the country.
by the way, i have a laptop! and i love it!
WE NEED A JACK IN THE BOX HERE IN LOUISVILLE NOW. AND AN IN N OUT.
grr. All the good fast food I don't get. I have to get fat on the crappy stuff...
Oh, Spork, Carls Jr. = Hardee's. Or at least close enough...
--Fiend
shit, no, Carl jr. isn't that great ... I just remember they had a funny commercial ... I was thinking of Jack in the box though that had the good burgers
ahhhhhhhhhh jack in the box tacos....so good. so cheap. burgers too....ahhhh yes.
i love the antenna toppers, as well
antenna who?
Spork, the double decker McDonald's you're thinking of is on Second and Broadway. The one I'm talking about is back where 3rd St begins. Near my church, Iroquois Manor. The people at my McDonald's don't know how to work a shower let alone wifi [which, i admit, im not sure what it is. Maybe wireless internet? I'm so out of the technology loop]
One cause of the decline of McDonalds could possibly be that they have the worst service ever. This morning my dad and I went inside to get a #1 and a large coffee. Simple enough. However, it took about 10 minutes and they had to have over 20 people working. It never has good service, none of them, that I go to, have decent service.
Now, I know that I am spoiled with cable modem, instant!! messaging, and TV. I have become impatient and want everything now, or better, yesterday. So waiting a mere 10 minutes for a hot breakfast shouldn't be a problem. But, I can tell you i was really annoyed. If you [referring to McDonald's] promise quick food, then it's expected. When you dont deliver, you lose business; just like what is apparantly happening to McDonald's.
is number one a mcgriddle? oh my god those are so good!
yeah, wi-fi is the term for the radio band/frequency range that 802.11x uses ... although, wi-fi might just be the 802.11b draft ... 802.11g might extend beyond that ... anyone know?
S.
spork, i think we need to have a mcgriddle intervention...
hahah, carl's jr's 6 dollar burger is the SHIT. oh my goodness. i saw a commercial for it in cali and im like MOM I NEED TO GO THERE. so we went, and i inhaled it down, it was HEAVEN.
jack in the box. hm... they have cute antenna head things. oh hey, someone mentioned it! haha. but i told my cousins that we dont have jack in the box, and htey're like, you'renot missing out on anything. but in and out, YOU NEED IN AND OUT.
yea mcgriddles are good, but its just more .. crap added to a bun that you dont need to eat.. oh well. i always go to mcdonald's for the milkshakes. i know steak and shake's are better, but mcdonald's is quicker .. and its cheaper ... and .. ok im rambling.
Man, mcdonalds shakes are sooo bad. I used to like them, and they've just gotten worse and worse now.
And WHATS UP WITH THOSE STUPID LIDS?!?!!??!?!?! I mean seriously... whatever happened to the normal lids that actually keep the shake in the cup, instead of these stupid ones that are open and it all spills if the cup falls over? (yeah, it happened to me... and then I spent about an hour making sure it was all out of my passenger seat, blah.)
Are you thinking of a McFlurry? Cause last I checked McDonald's still gives you the regular lid on shakes and the McFlurry's have the raised/opened lid for spoon access.
Also, say who you are. Posting anonymously doesn't mean you can literally post anonymously, just you post without a login.
oops, that was me, I forgot to login... silly me.
no, I mean the actual shakes. Every mcdonalds I've been to gives those crappy open lids. Which is why I've stopped going there for shakes... I don't have cupholders in any of my cars, I can't afford to have it fall over with an open lid.
you're right, that sucks ... friggen mcdonalds ...
Where are our Starlight frozen custard friends? Perhaps they can comment on this issue, though I wonder if they still read here ... Jordan? Krista? hello?
Maybe it has to be politics and/or justin lewis has to be posting, giving reason for them to piss him off.
ahhhh frozen custard. yum. yum.
and wahoo for antenna toppers!!! joanna knows what i'm talking about. they are wonderful. i love mine, even though he now has no eyes or mouth. poor little guy. but it makes the car so much easier to spot in a parking lot.
The Starlight kids have disbanded... Krista is off to college and soon I will no longer be employed there. Anyway, I would gladly respond bus after glacing through the various posts I'm not exactly sure of what to respond to. Milkshake lids? Cyber McDonalds? What ever happened to posts with 100 comments about religion, homosexuality, and republicans? Not necissarilly (Don't ask me how to spell that) in that order ;) Anyway, now that I've finally gotten away from most of the drama Louisville offers I'll be here at the Spork more often. Cheers.
hey! I have a laptop! I love my laptop! I don't have wi-fi but I do have a wireless LAN and broadband, and I love them! And I love McDonalds! (well, not really) But I am obesce! wow! I finally feel like I fit in somewhere...
ok. thoughts --
I'd never bring my laptop into McD's because 1) I'd get the keyboard all greasy 2) little kiddies would be making noise so I couldn't concentrate or get any actual work done, and 3) If it was at the double-decker on 2nd, I'd be too afraid it would get stolen (cuz you know I'm not taking my computer into a McDonald's bathroom) or I'd get jacked in the parking lot by the same crazy old dude who has asked me for money the last 3 times I have been there... a coffee shop is a different deal, all togther. You never run into yuppies asking you for spare change...
service at the golden arches is crap. I ordered ice cream cones about 3-4 weeks ago (on 2nd St.) and the lady gave me a couple of bowls full of cold vanilla soup, spoons, and an ice-cream cone stuck in the top of each and said "Our machine's not workin' right so the ice cream may be a little warm. That'll be $3.50." ha. not funny.
burger joints / fast food in general:
Isn't Jack-In-the-Box just like Rally's? And what's that other restaurant they have down south that's supposed to be just like White Castle? Is it Checkers? I don't know but they use mustard instead of onions and pickles and thus, aren't near as good. White Castles? anyone? mmmmm... They just opened an A&W out here by my house. I don't know of any others in Louisville. But from what I hear, it's not too bad. Also, Hardee's is supposed to be better, now, too. And what ever happened to Long John Silver's and those other fast seafood places? where's the variety, here, folks?
-- Devin
hahah your ice cream story is funny
variety? who likes variety? its all about monopoly, baby. ^_^ i've never been to checkers or long john silver's, but white castle brings back fond childhood memories of watching my friends eat those sack of .. 8 or 10 or 12 or whatever. how gross.
checker's....mmmm....yes. white castle, not so much for me.
and what happened to popeye's? are those still around here? and we need a taco cabana like nobody's business!
sliders rawk ... yes, checkers is right, but none in louisville ... I actually have never been, my mom loved them from sometime in her past
It's all about Johnny Rockets ... it's basically steak and shake, but even more old school on the inside ...
S.
Johnny Rockets sucks... the food is overpriced, the decor is tacky beyond belief, and the food sucks anyway.
sounds a lot like steak and shake to me ...
but dude, just go and crush my childhood memory here
I haven't been in a good 6 years
Checkers? I thought the White Castle rip-off down south was Krystals or Krystal Burgers? eh well...
tangent: I've been at college for about four days now. It's pretty cool, a completely new experince and group of people all together. I've learned more in two 8 hour psychology classes than I learned in an entire year at Manual (could be it's being taught by a published and reknowned professor, Jay Kidwell, rather than by a newspaper teacher). It's odd how quickly you learn the roads of a new city once you get lost a few dozen times. :-)
Love and Peace
Bigg Dawg
Steak n' Shake actually has good food that isn't THAT overpriced, and their decor is rather subdued (their promotional items might not be, but the actual restaurant is good). Beeyotch. I
Well then we should go sometime, call it an educational experience, you can pay for my meal to prove to me how much better SnS is compared to JR. If you wont' pay for my meal, then ... well ... we should still go :-P.
I just got my laptop. I absolutely love it. It kept me entertain when I had to suffer through a trip to my grandparents' house this weekend. Which brings up another point...
They need Pal's in Louisville (well I guess Champaign now). Most of you have probably never heard of Pal's but they have the best burgers and fries in East Tennessee (don't laugh) for really cheap prices. I had a 1/3 lb burger, fries, and a coke for less than $3 on my home Sunday.
That's all I got. I hope everyone stays in touch even though I am guilty for disappearing for the entire summer.
I haven't looked if you have yet, but just make sure you add all your data to jo.thespork.com. This goes for anyone reading this message now that has not yet.
Just had me a McGriddle this morning ... mmm mmm good. My mouth is still watering. Didn't bring my laptop for the wifi yet to be installed in the broadway and 15th McDonald's. Heh.
Spork.
