Just note that Insight might

Just note that Insight might shut down thespork.com again. If this happens, I will be offline (because they disable your account) until I can convince them to put me back up. When this happens, look for me online and check my profile for updates on when/how the site will be back up.

Our ISP blows. -BE

I hate the fuggin biotches .... I think they server port scanned me because I've been maxing out my downloads on newsgroups for two weeks straight with very little breaks. So like you don't run a server, but you probably get port scanned a lot because of all the bandwidth you do from newsgroups. It's unfortunate that because I do a lot of downloads now, that they decide to port scan me and find stuff.

Take thespork down temporarily and be like "server? what server?"

I'm pretty sure they save the log until the problem is fixed ... then they probably monitor for a few weeks, and then assume I'm clean ... cause I usually can always get back up pretty quickly.

But I'm thinking that as of the moment things with Insight, and me going to college, and concerns with my parents and our home network while I'm away, that it's highly likely TheSpork.NET (the web server at my house) will go down permanently. It's convenient to have to happen now, because my domains run out next month or the following. I was going to renew, but now I might not.

I think that, after talking with CJ, I might start a "save thespork.net" foundation. Basically, I've got enough clients through correctdesign.com that if I somehow come up with about 300 dollars a year (25/mo), maybe a little more, maybe a little less, then I can move thespork.net (and all sites hosted) as well as my correct design clients over to real web hosting (1500/year total is the target price). So I'm going to try to set up a paypal donations thingy, and everyone can donate, and if you donate 100 dollars or more, you get free hosting (technically not free, but y'know) for a year. What do you think?

Save TheSpork!

Yesterday I checked my Zone Alarm Pro logs and found 47 port scans from Insight IPs in the 24 hrs period. One of my best friends works for Insight (BB tech support no less), so I emailed him the logs and he verified that the scans are Insight port scans. He said that they are having issues with bandwidth at the head-end (where Insight connects to the ATT network), so they may have upped their enforcement. I asked about the whole newsgroups maxing out bandwidth thing, and he said it is possible they see that and think something against the rules is happening, so they up their scans of those IPs.

Insight still sucks.

PS I would chip in some $$.

I am extremely confused.

Yesterday, 8/21/03 (well, ok, since it's midnight, that's two days ago ... but basically yesterday) I get the following:

 Dear Insightbb.com Customer,

To ensure that all Insightbb.com customers consistently receive the highest quality service available, Insight monitors network usage to ensure that usage activity does not violate our policies and procedures as detailed in our Acceptable Use Policy.

It has come to our attention that you are running at least one server on the network. This is in violation of the Insightbb.com Acceptable Use Policy.

We must hereby notify you to disconnect your server(s) and cease other activity in violation of the Policy as of today. If you do not comply with this notice, we will disconnect your Insightbb.com service.

As you know, the use of servers and other such violations of the Policy place an unusually large burden on the network. Insightbb.com is a residential service. Bandwidth and data storage resources are designed to support residential usage. In maintaining compliance with our Policy, we are protecting the interests of the tens of thousands of customers who are using the service appropriately.

For more information about the Insightbb.com Acceptable Use Policy, please visit www.insightbb.com/terms_conditions. We are confident that you appreciate the urgency of our request and look forward to keeping you as an Insightbb.com customer in good standing.

Sincerely,

Insight Security

So I turn off email. Call up insight, act dumb, say "can you scan me so I can make sure everything is gone before you rescan and shut me down." He says "you've still got a web site and DNS ... and oh, this site is interesting." I'm thinking ("why is he reading my site?") and he's like "there's no site at your computer." "OK" (hurray, my 404 error at http://12.220.218.217 trick still works!) So I turn off DNS cause I only used it for my email server anyway, which is now down.

Anyway, I figure why not keep the web site up, they'll report scan and the only thing they'll find is http port 80 and when they go to it they wont' see anything.

Well, tonight I get this email:

 Dear Customer:

It has come to our attention that a Server Warning letter was mistakenly sent to some customers. We apologize for any confusion or offense this may have caused.

To ensure that all Insightbb.com customers consistently receive the highest quality service available, Insight monitors network usage to ensure that usage activity does not violate our policies and procedures as detailed in our Acceptable Use Policy. You can read our policies and procedures at:

http://www.insightbb.com/terms_conditions/

While you may have received this letter in error, we would like to remind our customers that running any server is in violation of our AUP.

Again we would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Sincerely

Insight Internet Investigations and Security Services Team

The question is how do I figure out if I'm one of the people the letter was mistakenly sent to or not?

I'd still like to go ahead with the Save TheSpork foundation. I need an incentive though for people to donate below 100 dollars. This should be semi-legit basically. Any ideas? I throw in a free radiohead bootleg? Maybe I send them a thank you card, or a few muffins? Sexual favors? drugs? heh

Seriuosly though, to finally never have to deal with insight again would be great.

Here's the project plan:

1) both of my two clients' sites will not go up till Octoberish.
2) but I don't go to school till late September anyway
3) run off my home server for now, try to collect money
4) by november have my own virtual dedicated server (150/month)
5) by 2005 have my own dedicated server :-P (500/month)

Ok, so option five is a little pushy. But it'd be nice.

We'll see where we go from here.

Spork.

did i hear muffins?

I'd pitch in.

(i forgot my password)

OK...so I chatted earlier with my connection at Insight. He said he could port scan your IP for you after you get any config done and see if it shows anything. Kinda like a "OK...how about now??" test method.

Call me if interested.

That'd be cool, I'll try to call you when I get to St. Louis.

RADIOHEAD!!!! w007!!!

You suck...rub it in.

Missed your call today- was in E-town and my phone was roaming. Sorry you aren't worth .30 a minute. :)

Call me when you get back and fill me in on the show.
